Been thinking a lot about this in recent months. Interestingly enough, I'm on the favorable side of "awards" - something I always wanted, always dreamed to have-and i am very grateful for what i have received...and don't get me wrong, I still dream the grammy dream (ex through the impossible word-that shit belongs in cheesy broadway numbers...)so it's not as if the dream is over, but every time another award label comes my way "most blah blah blah band...top 10 emerging artist...India's favorite so and so" I just wonder what it actually means.
It feels good. Most definitely. And it's nice to be acknowledged. Because sometimes ego rubbing feels like chocolate on a sugar deprived tongue. You get me?
Like recently, for the AVIMA awards, Shaa'ir + func won the title of "Most mind-boggling, genre-bending track" - and I have to give these guys props for coming up with a category called "most mind-boggling". What fun. But I'm biased, I love the word boggle. Just say it. Felt good, didn't it? Don't lie. Boggleboggleboggle.
I really want to know what you think.
What do awards even mean. Do you give a second glance to artists just because they are "award-winning"...do you think I should start my own awards? Shall I write a list of superlatives right now...
1. Band/Artist most likely to break shit on stage
2. Band/Artist most likely to get the audience naked
3. Band/Artist most likely to have Mallika Sherawat guest on the flute for their next tour
4. Most under-produced but still effing awesome TRACK
5. Band/Artist most likely to succeed in Antarctica
6. Most Prolific Band/Artist
7. Best song that mimics the human condition
8. Band/Artist most likely to give up music and become a Jew for Jesus uniting the ongoing disparity between catholics and jesuits in India.
what? i know. i don't get it either.
okay, done for now. anxiously awaiting your response.

Monica - you guys are mind boggling! and its a fantastic category! I agree :)
I love the rest of them as well.
But seriously, the whole awards thing is just another way to publicize the band (from the band's perspective) and draw a lot of internet traffic (from the organizer's perspective)
Its an easy way to get a lot of email addresses :D
Don't forget the award for most likely to win an award lol
I think awards are a way for your peers to say hey we think u really kick ass at this ... so u should definitely seize the moment sit back smile and enjoy because it means all your struggles actually meant something.
For sure. Agree with you guys...and I DO feel good. Makes me want to work even harder - get to the next level.
I guess these awards mean something because of the attention we give to them...and I suppose anything that draws more attention to the independent music scene in India, gets my vote.
